Welcome to the website for the Friends of the Minneota Library. It's taken a bit of work but we're all updated and on track now.
The donation button on the right hand side will allow you to make donations using Paypal, this will allow credit card payments even if you don't have a paypal account.
As new projects are started and completed, information about these projects will be posted and hopefully photos will be added to our gallery of the projects themselves. If you have questions, or comments, please feel free to use the Contact Us form from the link at the bottom of the page.
Thank you for supporting our cause and keeping books alive. |

Minneota Native Bill Holm Passes Away at 65 |
|
|
|
The Midwest has lost a treasured voice with the passing of Bill Holm, an author who traveled the world but remained firmly rooted in the southwestern Minnesota prairie.
Holm, 65, died Wednesday at the Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls. Services are pending.
Holm, a poet and essayist, was born in 1943 on a farm north of Minneota. He continued to live there while working as an English professor at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, where he taught for 27 years before retiring in 2007.

Big Plans for the Big Store |
|
|
|
|
The Friends of the Minneota Library, Inc. are pleased to announce our BIG plans. We are ready to transform one of Minneota’s National Historic Landmarks: The Big Store, built in 1901. Our goal is to make it the BIG new home of Minneota’s Public Library, originally founded in 1902.
Why? Doesn’t Minneota already have a nice library?
Yes, but the current library:
- is only 1200 sq. ft.
- is too cramped for patrons to access the stacks during story time,
- lacks a non-fiction/ research section,
- has no study desks or tables for patrons and only one small reading bench,
- has no room for expanding the collection,
- and is not temperature or humidity controlled to protect older or rare books.
An expanded library in The Big Store would:
- be 5000 sq. ft - 4 times as BIG as the current space!
- have a dedicated children’s section with space for special children’s programs
- make a meeting room available for book clubs, study sessions, genealogy research groups, etc.
- have a proper non-fiction research section,
- provide study space and reading chairs,
- allow for an expanded collection,
- be temperature and humidity controlled,
- have display space for local history, artists, and other displays,
- and be connected to Minneota’s existing Senior Center, allowing for access during community events.
Where does this BIG project stand and what BIG changes are next?
The City of Minneota has purchased The Big Store from The Historical Society, which will continue to be housed on the upper level.
